Year 11 CECAMM Visit

As a part of their ongoing preparations for transition to Post-16 education, a number of Year 11 pupils were invited to attend the Isle of Wight College and CECAMM campus in East Cowes, 24th January 2022, for tours and discussions based around their interests and potential careers.

Year 11 pupils who were thinking about applying to the IW College had the opportunity to visit the campus and have a tour of every department. They were impressed by the extensive facilities, and the staff were very friendly and spoke to pupils about their specialist areas. Pupils also found it useful to have a thorough insight into the new T-Levels on offer from September, including the work experience available and career prospects. The Year 11’s particularly enjoyed the animal management area, where they met tortoises, exotic frogs and some very lively chickens!
It was also wonderful to see past pupils around the site, who were happy to talk about their college experiences so far. Pupils asked insightful questions, and view each course area with an open mind- some even reconsidered their post-16 options!

The IW College is hosting an Open Day this Saturday for anyone who would still like to have a look around.
Pupils were also very impressed with the new CECAMM campus layout and thoroughly enjoyed learning about the vast employment sector of engineering. The tour consisted of viewing potential working and learning environments, specialised machinery and workshops, and previously produced schematics and engineering designs.
The Year 11’s on the visit then engaged in practical sessions where they were instructed on creating simple circuits using copper tape and LED’s, crafting their own initialled dog-tag from sheet aluminium, and having a go at welding through the use of a virtual reality set-up.

Pupils thoroughly enjoyed their visit and are excited to move onto their next stage of education towards a chosen career path. Any pupils who are interested in a career in engineering are also encouraged to attend BAE Systems’ Open Evening, which will be held virtually on 8th and 9th February, with the deadline for Apprenticeship applications being 28th February.
