On Friday 18th November, a group of Year 8 pupils attended a STEM event hosted by Winchester Science Centre to celebrate International Men’s Day. The event was aimed at encouraging pupils to consider pursuing a career the Science, Technology and Engineering industries. Pupils met with other Year 8 pupils from around the southern counties to work together on a variety of STEM activities, including using robotic arms, making and racing a Bristle Bot, and who could make a ramp to launch a RC car the furthest – which our boys won! Pupils then took part in a speed networking event, where they met a number of STEM ambassadors who work in huge range of STEM industries; from Ministry of Defence explosives experts to geophysicists. Pupils quizzed ambassadors on how they became interested in their chosen careers, what qualifications they have and what academic pathway lead them to their current job.
To round off the day, pupils were treated to intergalactic tour in Winchester Science Centre’s 360 degree planetarium dome, and an opportunity to sample the wide range of interactive exhibits at the Science Centre.

Head of Science, Mr Teague, said afterwards: “The boys behaved impeccably and were a real credit to the school – a great day was had by all.”
