RE and Curriculum Day – 1st October 2021

On Friday 1st October, pupils were off timetable for the first R.E day of the academic year.

Year 7 pupils concentrated on Christianity. They focused on the structure of churches and how they are constructed, producing their own models of churches after gaining this knowledge. Year 7’s also produced their own stain glass windows after learning how they are made, as well as studying the harvest and its symbolic meaning within Christianity.

Pupils from Year 8 gained an insight of what it is like to be a Hindu child in today’s society. They worked in small groups to understand the religion and key aspects such as: Raksha Bandhan, the Cycle of Life, Pilgrimage, Hindu Marriage, Holi and Diwali.

Year 9 learnt about crime and punishment. The sessions were based around individuals who commit crime and why they do so, crime and religion, forgiveness and redemption, and capital punishment. Pupils engaged in discussions around rules and laws within contemporary society and why they are needed. Year 9’s also explored how prisons are presented in media such as television and films.

Year 10 focused on Rights and Responsibilities for their Ethics and Philosophy Day. Pupils participated in sessions based around human rights, animal rights and the right to protest. They then watched Invictus, a film about Nelson Mandela’s responsibilities as the leader of post-Apartheid South Africa. Lots of important discussions were had across the day, and pupils responded really well to some challenging topics and questions.

Year 11 engaged in a Curriculum Day involving three different sessions for core subjects, Maths, English and Science. During the English session, pupils completed tasks relating to Jekyll and Hyde, Macbeth and An Inspector Calls. These were practical activities and pupils left feeling positive and confident with their knowledge of key quotes from the texts.
