Last Friday a record number of 9 pupils from The Island Free School came together with teams from 7 other secondary schools across the island to represent their school in the annual inter school’s dressage competition.

Horses and riders performed a set test gaining a mark out of 10 for every movement, combined with collective marks for the overall performance, culminating in a percentage score to decide the final standings.

We were very fortunate the forecast rain held off, however high winds meant riders had to work particularly hard to reassure their horses, keep them calm and hold their concentration during their tests. Our riders rode accurate, well executed tests with riders showing great percentages on the score-boards. Individual highlights include Erin placing second and another TIFS pupil fifth in section A, and Ruby L second and Hannah fifth in section B. Some of these fantastic percentages led to TIFS securing third place in the team competition.

Competing in equestrian events is not just the test itself, but the commitment pupils make to getting to the stables early in the morning to make sure their horses are polished and plaited and looking after them throughout the day to ensure their welfare in what can be a quite an excitable and nervous occasion for horses as well as riders. All horses and riders were beautifully turned out, worked as a team to support each other during a very busy day and were fantastic ambassadors for the school.

It is always a pleasure to have some new riders representing the school in equestrian sport for the first time and a joy to see the progress of our returning riders as they continue to develop their skills, both as riders and in training their horses. Well done to Ruby D and Hattie for taking turns as event photographer when not riding themselves.
