European Day of Languages

On Monday, 4th October 2021, we celebrated European Day of Languages. This is an international event, with the aim of the day being to show how important it is to learn other languages; helping us to understand each other better and overcome our cultural differences.

Pupils followed their normal timetable, however we held a fancy dress competition which meant that they were able to come to school wearing the colours of their favourite European flag. They also experienced a Mediterranean lunch with European themed music, an unusual customs quiz and a treasure hunt competition.
During lessons, pupils were given tasks related to European Countries – for example in Geography Mrs Walker prepared a capital city and flag starter for her pupils and in Drama, Mrs McCarthy and her groups looked at a German play. All of Ms Travers class pupils said “good morning” or “good afternoon” in Latvian as she took the registers: Labrīt– good morning, Labdien – good afternoon. They also had to guess her flag/country from the clues she gave out during her lessons.

Pupils also watched a video of various staff (non-MFL teachers) speaking in foreign languages, including Mr Harding showcasing his fluent Spanish, Mr Reflinski his fluent Polish and Mrs Saltaformaggio her Italian language skills.
In Science, Mr Gove’s classes all learned the names for lab equipment in French and in her lessons, Mrs Peace told pupils about life in Gibraltar, where she is originally from.
The school was alive with colour and enthusiasm for languages, and a very enjoyable day was had by all. Congratulations to Amelie R who was awarded the prize for best costume and received a voucher for Michaelangelo’s Italian Restaurant. We hope she enjoys a lovely Italian meal with her family.
