On Tuesday 13th December
A small group of Year 8 pupils were invited to spend the day at Southampton University to experience parts of life as a university student. The day started off with a taster lecture on Animation where the pupils enjoyed watching clips from Disney classics and thinking about anthropomorphism in the film industry. This was followed by a seminar and workshop led by one of the University’s PHD students. The Year 8’s learnt about the science of reflection in their seminar, and enjoyed the practical activity of making a Pepper’s Ghost Illusion, which helped to show how reflection works. The group then had a workshop on university accommodation and were very interested to learn about the different types of accommodation available.
Congratulations to Maisie B, Nicole S and Isabel T who won the ‘packing for university’ challenge, narrowly beating Mr Green’s team, and creating the best list of items you would need to move into university accommodation comfortably. After lunch, the pupils were given a campus tour by one of the University’s student ambassadors. The Year 8’s were surprised to learn how big the University is and excited to hear about all the opportunities around campus, with the Sport’s Centre being the most popular building amongst the group.
