Mr Jake Chatwin
Head of Year 9 & Teacher of Science
Mr Chatwin grew up on the island and completed his GCSEs at Carisbrooke College. He then went on to study A-Levels in Maths, Further Maths and Chemistry at the Island Innovation Sixth Form. He earned a 2:1 Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from the University of Brighton focussing in his project work on detecting chemicals using crown-ether complexes.
In his spare time Mr Chatwin enjoys a lot of different tabletop board and card games such as Dungeons and Dragons, Magic: The Gathering, as well as a number of video games. Mr Chatwin is also an avid musician who, over the last 15 years, has learned to play guitar, drums, ukulele, piano and the ocarina – each to varying degrees of success!
Mr Chatwin is involved in the school’s music tuition and takes great joy in helping to run the year 8 guitar and year 7 ukulele enrichments.

Experience
Mr Chatwin has just recently completed his PGCE qualification where he had placements at both Cowes Enterprise College and The Island Free School, teaching all the way from year 7 to sixth form level.
His focus throughout his PGCE has been on developing his skills at implementing formative assessment into lessons and, in general, developing his pedagogical skills to become a successful teacher.
My Goals
My goal is to learn from all of the fantastic teachers that are at The Island Free School.
In doing so I believe that I can develop my own teaching practice and make it as effective as possible to help guide the next generation of scientists to discover the joy of exploring and explaining the world around them.
