This week we have been delighted to be able to once again perform to a live audience. Sharing three plays over three nights, audiences were treated to a range of styles and stories performed by pupils across all year groups. Here is a round up of our week: 

‘Tuesday’ – Year 8 Pupils with Year 11 Drama Ambassadors 

Tuesday brought much joy and fun whilst also touching on the challenges that teenagers face in contemporary society, for example friendship, grief and identity. Using a minimal set and elements of physical theatre, the play relied on ensemble work and the cast rose to this challenge superbly! We are incredibly proud of the lovely supportive nature of the cast members who have all grown in confidence throughout the production process. ‘Tuesday’ marked the last performance for Year 11 pupils who have been a wonderful part of the Drama department over the last five years. It was also the first performance for our Year 8 pupils, who we look forward to working with again in the future.

‘Jungle Book’ – Year 7 with Year 10 Drama Ambassadors

This week our Year 7 Drama Club and Year 10 Drama Ambassadors performed an original adaptation of ‘The Jungle Book’, directed by Miss Allcock and featuring original music by Mr Balch. Pupils worked incredibly hard to tell this classic story of life in the jungle and finding where you belong. The audience enjoyed the beautiful set, fantastic energy and sense of fun that was created by the monkeys and teamwork of wolves, supporting Mowgli through all his trials and tribulations with the terrifying Shere Khan. The storytellers narrated the tale with clarity and enthusiasm. Miss Allcock loved Mr Balch’s description of the show: ‘pocket theatre’ short and sweet but everything you need to make a story come alive!

‘Romeo and Juliet’ – Year 9 and 10 Pupils

We transported this classic love story to 1980’s Germany. With a country divided by a wall for 20 years, the people were growing restless, ultimately defying the controls they had lived with to prove that love is thicker than concrete. Pupils gave a stunning performance, tackling this difficult text with a boldness beyond their years. They worked superbly as an ensemble to create the various locations and environments of the play and pupils excelled in the performance of principal roles.

We would like to say a huge congratulations to all pupils involved and the Drama Department would like to say a big thank you to everyone that helped and supported throughout the week. We are now looking forward to the Summer term and beginning rehearsals for our whole school production ‘A Christmas Carol’.
