It may have been half term, but there was still lots going on in the TIFS community last week.
On 12th February, four of our Year 11 pupils participated in the Model United Nations at Ryde School. The pupils took part in different councils debating important global issues of the moment. The pupils were eloquent and enthusiastic and a credit to the school.
Monday 14th February and Tuesday 15th February saw the opening of our new TIFS uniform swap shop which proved to be a huge success. Over the two days that it was open we supported over 25 families. We would like to say a big thankyou to all those involved in the opening over the half-term and to those who donated uniform items.
On Wednesday 16th February, a selection of Year 7 and 8 pupils took part in the Isle of Wight Secondary Schools Indoor Athletics Competition at Medina College. Pupils participated in a range of field and track events during the day, and finished the afternoon with team relay events. The pupils who attended conducted themselves brilliantly and were exemplary representatives of our school. We are delighted to announce that overall we finished 1st out of 7 schools. Well done to all pupils who participated in this outstanding achievement!
The annual IOW Schools Indoor Rowing competition returned on Thursday 17th February after 2 years. Each competitor at the event had an endurance or sprint race to complete, and in some cases pupils completed both. The relays were held at the end of the competition, and the overall results were in the balance right up to the final relay. The Island Free School finished in 2nd place overall which was a truly remarkable achievement and a wonderful reflection of the hard work put in by all involved. Many thanks to Mr Marriott and Miss Lear who accompanied the teams along with Mr Milton.
Also on Thursday 17th, our Drama Ambassadors attended the evening showing of The National Theatre’s ‘Book of Dust’, which was live streamed from the Bridge Theatre and shown in cinemas across the UK. Mrs McCarthy, Miss Allcock and Mrs Walker accompanied the pupils who had a very enjoyable evening. Sam S said: “I enjoyed the way it was theatrically presented, especially the use of staging and video projection”, Lillie H commented “I loved the way the play combined the magical world and real life issues”. Pupils were beautifully behaved and inspired by what they saw.
We must also thank Mrs Steele, Mrs McCarthy, Miss Allcock and all the cast members that came in over the holidays for drama rehearsals for our upcoming productions ‘Tuesday’, ‘Jungle Book’ and ‘Romeo and Juliet’. The groups had a creative and productive time and we are very much looking forward to the performances that will take place later in March (more details soon!)
