Year 11 Ventnor Haven Trip

Year 11 Industry Insights – Ventnor Haven

As part of our careers programme, Year 11 have the opportunity to sign up for a trip each Friday afternoon to various Island businesses, to gain an insight into a broad range of sectors, and speak to employers directly to discover more about their industry.

On Friday 13th January, the first of these trips took place to Ventnor Haven, where pupils were greeted by Ed Blake who gave a thorough insight into the opportunities available within fishing; a profitable and growing industry. Pupils asked brilliant questions, and were surprised at the sheer scope of roles; from logistics and transport, to tourism, maritime and workboats, hospitality and retail, as well as fishing itself.

Ed highlighted the importance of exploring different careers at a young age, and building on their skills, experience and eagerness to learn, particularly where there is a growing demand for a young and enthusiastic workforce with exciting prospects.

Ed was also passionate about pupils being aware of the opportunities on their doorstep, and encouraged them to pop in or make contact if they are interested in work experience or generally being involved in the growth and development of the Haven (including exciting plans within boatbuilding and sustainability).

Thank you Ed for an insightful afternoon – and for introducing the group to the catch of the day…!
