TIFS Day of Languages 2022

Today, Monday 21st November, we celebrated our annual Day of Languages at The Island Free School.

It was fantastic to see so much effort put into the fancy dress, as pupils and staff entered the building this morning. Despite the colder temperatures, the atmosphere was lovely and vibrant from the beginning.

In mentor time, pupils had a World Cup languages quiz – including questions about the languages the different teams would be speaking at the event. We also heard crowd noises from the various fans and had to guess which language they were chanting in, which was really fun and interesting. In each individual lesson, pupils started with a cross-curricular activity involving a language. For example, in Year 7 English pupils had different idioms in Japanese and had to work out what these meant in English before attempting to say them together, in Japanese.

At lunch time, we were treated to cuisine from around Europe including dishes from Romania, Greece, Spain, Germany and Italy. The food was delicious and the different salads on offer were particularly amazing! A big thank you must go to our wonderful catering team.

Many of the Key Stage 2 pupils enjoyed the ‘Which teacher speaks which language quiz’ and many received a little prize for getting this completed correctly throughout the day.

There were notable mentions for the prize of best dressed mentor group including 7/8 Rosea MF/AES, 7/8 Viridis MGP/MSH and 10 Flavi amongst others. The prize though went to 7/8 Viridis BBH/MAP with their representation of Spain.

Well done everyone for such great effort and enthusiasm – we will look forward to doing it all again next year!
