On Wednesday 2nd March, a group of Year 10 pupils were invited to attend a series of TED Talks in an event which was the first of its kind for the Isle of Wight.
TED dates back to 1984 and is now a global organisation, welcoming people from every discipline and culture who seek a deeper understanding of the world through 20 minute talks from diverse speakers. All of the talks centered around the question: “If not now, when?” and sparked interest, conversation and inspiration in our pupils.
To open the event, 19-year-old singer-songwriter from the Isle of Wight, Beth Brookfield, performed an original song to tie in with the theme. Following this, TIFS pupils along with young people from other island schools and colleges, heard four short talks delivered by speakers from very different walks of life; from global business leaders, to sustainable engineers, to authors. The messages within these speeches included reminding us of the precious time we have, and urging us to make the most of our time, emphasising the importance of a positive mindset and avoiding procrastination. Pupils also heard important messages around sustainability, and how we can all live greener in a more proactive way. We also heard how challenging the status quo can empower young people, and how we should be encouraged to use our “gift of curiosity”. Finally, pupils listened to an inspirational speech on perceptions of disability from island writer and podcaster, Josh Barry.
Pupils were really inspired by the talks they heard, and the event was followed up with a competition for all teams from different schools and colleges to submit a report for the event, with the winner featuring in the IW Observer (to be announced soon).
TIFS were delighted to be invited to this inaugural event for the Island, and we hope it continues in future years.
