On Thursday 21st July The Island Free School celebrated two very important and successful whole school events – Speech Day and the Summer Show.
This year, both events were held at our Rew Valley site and saw year 7, year 8, staff and family members come together to celebrate the huge amount of talent we have in our school.
Following an inspiring speech from Mr Boyd, progress awards were handed out to Ethan B, Lily G, Emily C, Heather S, John K, Alexandra E, Arthur R, Finley LLoyd, Isobelle J-P, Louie L, and Eloise M from year 7 and Elana A, Oliver G, Charles W, Daisy U, Leah-Louisa P, Rebecca G,Ella P, Louis W, Kirsty A,Silas B and Theo K from year 8. The overall progress awards went to Thomas T and Oliver C, the Head of Year awards to Oliver K and Georgia F and the Nulli Secundus award to Silas B. The Headmaster’s award this year went to Ella W in year 8. Highlights of the ceremony included Mr Peace’s video anthology which showed hundreds of photographs documenting each term which brought back some wonderful memories.
Following the Speech Day ceremony, the whole school body moved to the field for a picnic lunch with family members, where anticipation of the Summer Show entry results began to build. Whilst waiting for the judges to leave the marquee and winners to be revealed, pupils, staff and guests distracted themselves with ice-cream, Huxley’s magic tricks, patting the donkeys and taking part in various stall games.
Once the judges had finished their task, entrants excitedly made their way into the marquee to see the competition and whether they had gained any awards. With over 850 entries this year ,Andrew Woodford from the Chale Show said that this makes our show the second largest on the Island and to his knowledge, no other school does anything like this.
At the end of the afternoon, Mr Boyd and Mrs Walker announced the trophy winners: Most points in produce: Trudi B, Most points in baking: Izaac K, Most points in craft: Isobelle J-P, Most points overall: Trudi Boyns, and Best in show: Megan Turner.
Summer Show Co-Ordinator Mrs Walker wanted to thank all the children, family members and staff who entered to make our show such a success.Thank you also to all the people who quietly helped behind the scenes, and without whose help the show could not have happened.
We’re very grateful to everyone for their donations yesterday at the children’s stalls which raised £190 for the RSPCA.
