Yesterday, all TIFS Pupils were off timetable for RE and Curriculum day.
Year 7’s spent the day learning about Islam. In the morning, 7 Rosea had the opportunity to visit a Mosque, whilst other pupils engaged in sessions which consisted of learning about mosques and Islamic worship, Ramadan and Eid. Pupils also used the knowledge taught to engage in creative activities in which they made cards, boxes and sweets which focused on different aspects of the religion.
Pupils in Year 8 gained an understanding of Buddhism during RE Day. They engaged in different sessions based on a variety of aspects of the Buddhist religion. An eightfold path session was delivered to Year 8’s – during which pupils created storyboards using aspects of the rules Buddhists like to live by. One hour of the day was dedicated to post-16 options and pupils participated in activities which increased their understanding of the options available, allowing them to consider which GCSE options would be best to choose. Year 8’s also looked at Buddhism and diets, they studied how Buddhist monks collect alms, how they view food purely as a source of fuel for their bodies, and how they encourage vegetarianism due to health and environmental benefits.
Year 9’s spent the day participating in a creative response to everything they learnt about refugee’s last term. Pupils wrote poetry, created collages and crafted open letters as a call to action in support of the refugee crisis. Lots of important and meaningful conversations were had throughout the day. All pupils responded sensibly and sensitively to this challenging topic and produced some incredible pieces during the day.
The topic of war and conflict was the focus for Year 10’s. Pupils looked at creative responses to this topic. The day consisted of four sessions including art, drama, music and creative writing. During the art sessions, Year 10’s produced war memorials and embroidered pictures. The music session saw pupils learning chords and composing songs in groups, writing lyrics based on war. In their creative writing session, pupils studied letters from the front line and used these to produce their own war poems. Performances of the poem ‘Exposure’ by Wilfred Owen and the film ‘1917’ were created during the drama session. All pupils involved worked extremely hard and were empathetic to the experiences taught.
Year 11 pupils engaged in a day of revision, where pupils participated in short revision sessions for each of their GCSE subjects. A brief revision topic recap was followed by a short task to help pupils understand how to approach revision; this included the strategies and resources to use, in the final few weeks before exams begin.
